Action Figure Collecting

Action Figure Collecting is a great way to reconnect with your youth.

It brings back memories of childhood days spent pouring over comics. Or time spent glued to the television screen watching movies or serials of your favorite action heroes doing their stuff!

It is a hobby that you can start simply by adding one or two figures to your collection every few weeks or so.

Some people focus one particular figure while other choose a particular range of action figures or a particular style.

Action figure collecting can be a just for fun and enjoyment hobby or a hobby that can also be an investment.

You will need to choose whether you are going to display your action figures out of the packaging or if you are action figure collecting for a future investment, you might like to consider preserving the figures in their original packaging.

The choice is yours. Apart from the figures the only other necessity will be a place to display your figures. There are purpose build display cases that are ideal or you may have an appropriate place already. To keep them in mint condition you will want to keep the dust off your figures.

Johnny Action Figure $30.39 First, a clarification: the Johnny Action Figure heard on this 2004 release should not be confused with a Canadian band that used the same name back in the ’90s. While the Canadians (who have since changed their name to Ghost of Science) were from Victoria, British Columbia, this band is from Reading, PA (a few hours from Philadelphia). And there are stylistic differences as well; the Canadians have been compared to Radiohead, while Pennsylvania’s Johnny Action Figure is essentially emo. This self-titled CD has many of the familiar emo elements, including a bratty vocal style and a combination of punk-pop exuberance and introspective, confessional lyrics. Of course, the word “introspective” was seldom used in connection with punk-pop back in the late ’70s; no one accused the Dickies, the Ramones, or Generation X of being introspective — in those days, introspection was for Joni Mitchell and Janis Ian, not punk rockers. But thanks to bands like Green Day, the Get Up Kids, and blink-182, many listeners have grown accustomed to hearing a lot of punk-pop lyrics that are, in fact, inner-directed. While some emo discs can be hooky, JAF’s songs tend to be angular — the material on this CD is melodic, but definitely in an angular way. And while the album isn’t exceptional, it isn’t bad either. Those who haven’t burned out on emo (which experienced considerable saturation in the late ’90s and early 2000s) will hear some potential on tunes like “Cheating Is Risky Business,” “Magnesium,” and “Blood on the Moon,” all of which are among the album’s more memorable tracks. Action Figure Party $11.98 Jazz and rock hit it off just right on Greg Kurstin’s self-titled debut for the Verve label, Action Figure Party. The keyboardist brings together a diverse group of rock musicians including Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sean Lennon on turntables, Gabrial McNair of No Doubt, and Gary Novak, who has played with Alanis Morrissette and Chick Corea. All songs were written by Greg Kurstin except one, which was written by his wife and co-performer, Pamelia Kurstin. Action Figure Party opens with “Everybody Ready,” setting the party atmosphere with a radio-friendly track that’s still true to the jam-band idiom. Elements of jazz are introduced by way of Kurstin’s Moog and electric piano work on “Pong Baby,” a freewheeling mix of rock and jazz. “Flow,” spotlights Kurstin’s improvisational skills on acoustic piano that create a visual mood with pat but not overly familiar soloing. Flea fills in the basslines with his eclecticism, making this song happen while drummer Gary Novak provides additional rhythmic charisma with his accessible performance. Together their energy is electric, but still down to earth enough for jazz radio. On “No Sleep” Kurstin is playing great and so is Yogi on guitar with the wah-wah working just right. Kurstin’s special guests, with origins in both rock and jazz, make this ensemble of musicians one of the better jam bands in recent years.
